I think you are on to something here, Brandon. The truth is we are all one race. So the question, "Can't the races get along?" seems to be racist at the beginning. If looking different, or even behaving different, meant someone belonged to a different race, one would have to believe there were oh, 5 or 6 billion races in the world (making allowances for some strangers who seem to look like twins). That doesn't seem very scientific, it seems political, and malignanty so.
Are there people who wish to divide us? And why?
Currently there are many divisive messages on all sides. The one I can't figure out for the life of me is the signs that read "Science is Real". Who is that intended to divide?
Any political posturing is divisive by nature. By taking any stance, one is saying, "This is correct. That is wrong." Or, at the very least, "This is the way I prefer. Not that way." So, there's separation inherent. The thing today is that people are general more reactive and political. And politically-oriented groups are, collectively, more reactive and even pretty radical. (I make this point about gun rights activists and the LGBT community in my most recent article.)
So, while I don't discount some people strategically trying to divide the country, I believe the vast majority of the division is bottom-up, an organic reaction when connecting all of society together 24/7 (the Internet).
Yeah, the co-opting of science as a dividing tactic is particularly devious because it taints this pursuit which is apolitical by nature. It's also ironic given the anti-scientific politically-leaning displays in this Science Museum:/
