A six month research and development project that took place between April and October 2001, SFD explored the creative overlap between coding and choreography. The core research was conducted by a team of choreographers and digital artists/technologists and will comprised regular meetings for discussion and debate, observations/articulation of dance making and coding practices, field trips and away days to selected technology laboratories and studio based joint working sessions.

The project culminated in a two day think tank over 4-6 October 2001 at Sadler's Wells in London with an enlarged contingent of invited colleagues for discussion and debate that helped broaden and extend the outcomes of the research and to establish the conditions necessary to develop these further.

The core SFD team comprised four London based choreographers (Siohban Davies, Shobana Jeyasingh, Wayne McGregor and Ashley Page) working in collaboration with digital artists / technologists from the UK, Germany and Holland (Joseph Hyde; Christian Zielger, ZKM, interface designer for Forsythe CD-Rom; Adrian Ward winner of Transmediale Berlin's artist's software prize and Bruno Martelli of the London based Igloo Performance Group).

The project was facilitated by Scott deLahunta.
