The Bath Film Festival approached me to commission a live improvised performance to form a score to the silent film 'Aelita Queen of Mars'.
Aelita, directed by Yakov Protazanov in 1924, is one of the earliest science fiction movies made, and the first major piece of Soviet Cinema. It was therefore extremely influential on later, better known, Russian and sci-fi movies. Particularly in the martian scenes, it features lavish and highly-imaginative sets and costumes which provided rich inspiration for the music. |

I collaborated with Bristol-based experimental musicians Andy Keep and Barry Moon. I primarily used granulation techniques on samples of early-twentieth century Russian orchestral music, while Andy used advanced feedback techniques and Barry used a system which parodied traditional silent movie music by reacting to the activity within the movie image and building piano sequences according to the amount of activity. The performance took place in the Michael Tippet Centre, Bath, in October 2003. |
